About Sri Tulasidas

Goswami TulsidasSri Tulsidas was a great devotee of Lord Rama. He was born on the Shraavan Shukla Saptami in 1498 AD in Rajpur, Chitrakoot district, Uttar Pradesh, India. He was a Sarayuparina Brahmin by birth. Hulsi and Atmaram Shukla Dube were his parents and his birth was rather unusual. It is said that Sri Tulasidas did not cry at the time of his birth. He was born with all 32 teeth intact and was popularly known as Ram Bola.

Tulsidas was married to Buddhimati. She was a pious, obedient and intelligent woman. Tulsidas was very much attached to her. Day in and day out he was thinking of nothing but his wife. This made her wild and she uttered these words with a great feeling: “If you would have even the half of love that you have for my filthy body towards Lord Rama, you would certainly cross the ocean of Samasara and attain eternal bliss.” This words pierced his heart and from that day he resolved to leave everything for Lord Rama.

Then Tulsidas abandoned his home and became an ascetic. He spent 14 years visiting sacred places. Then it he met Lord Hanuman and through him he got a divine vision of Lord Rama. He took order of Hanuman and began composing “Sri Ramacharitmanas”. Sri Ramacharitmanas is very inspiring book in devotional service of Lord Rama. It contains sweet couplets in beautiful rhyme in praise of Lord Rama.
